Farm Tour Day 2015- June 20
9 a.m.- 3p.m.
Enjoy a day in the country and get a behind-the-scenes look at how your food and flowers are grown on the Sixth Annual Farm Tour Day in San Diego County. This is an exclusive look at a side of San Diego County few people get to see. We take one day each year to allow the public an opportunity to experience farming life! We have three excellent tours this year in:
Oceanside Valley Center Encinitas (sold out)
All three tours will include four farms and a great sample of San Diego agriculture.
Oceanside: Farmers will guide you through rows of strawberries and vegetables before you head toward a vineyard and full winery with a beautiful view of the Pacific. Stop on over to see an avocado grove featuring a number of unique tree species. Our final farmer will take your through greenhouses filled with the blooming indoor plants you love.
Valley Center: Start with a journey with a vintner through grapevines at a well-established vineyard and winery. Then you can walk in a farmer’s boots through a stand out produce farm where you’ll see all the farmers’ market produce growing right there. We have a great addition in this year’s tour with an avocado oil press and grove that will show you a whole new side to the avocado. Don’t forget to finish up at the water-wise nursery where our tour guide is a sought after expert on drought tolerant landscaping!
(sold out) Encinitas: Start off your tour with a jungle like greenhouse nursery featuring plants of every shape and color. Next you will see the diversity of San Diego Ag all in one place- with a vineyard, row crops, nursery plants and more in one spot. Head north over to a tree nursery where you will see all those plants you love to notice all over san Diego landscaping. Finish off with a produce farm that works directly with restaurants to provide the freshest produce for local chefs.
** Please note all locations are subject to change and farm names and addresses are never published publicly. Longer descriptions and all other information will be sent the week of the event to registered attendees. Starting farms will be assigned and all farms can be visited in any order.
Guided walking tours, led by the farmers themselves, will take you through their unique farming operations and showcase a variety of the region’s agricultural specialties. This educational exploration will delight all ages. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tour participants provide their own transportation and will receive detailed maps and driving directions. Each tour is focused in a local farming community, with four diverse farm stops. We recommend packing a picnic lunch for your group to take advantage of picturesque eating areas on every tour. All tours will showcase the diversity of San Diego agriculture and take place in the city listed and surrounding areas. Actual farm locations, descriptions and and directions will be sent to participants the week of the event.
Farm Tour Day is an outdoor guided walking tour event. Tour stops are active farming operations where ground is uneven, unpaved, sloped, and may include stairs. Tour participants are urged to wear sturdy, close-toed shoes, sunscreen and hats. Strollers are not recommended. If you have accessibility concerns, please contact Farm Bureau before the event.
