Facts for Funders
The City Heights Farmers’ Market’s motto is “Where we grow it fresh, and you buy it fresh.” Since
June 2008, the CHFM has provided access to locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables for a community that desperately needed it.
What has the City Heights Farmers’ Market done for the community?
- Provided a place to shop for quality, locally grown, seasonal produce. Almost 38,000 shoppers between June 2008 and September 2009 shopped at the market.
- Shoppers purchased over $170,000 dollars worth of produce from the CHFM produce vendors and farmers over fourteen months. 50% of these dollars was cash, almost 30% was the matching EBT program Fresh Fund, 14% was FMNP and another 8% was EBT. Did you know that for each dollar spent at the City Heights Farmers’ Market, that dollar can turn over in the community up to eight times?
- Allowed XXXXX people each week to buy produce using their EBT and with the Fresh Fund matching program. Over $51,000 was spent as a result of the Fresh Fund matching program, and another $13,000 was spent using EBT. Did you know that for $5 dollars spent using EBT, another $9.20 is generated in the general economy since it frees up money to be spent elsewhere in the community.
- A place of community and social interaction in a community that can feel isolated. People meet their friends and bring their family members to the CHFM. There are activities for everyone, including physical activities, distribution of health information, and information on how to grow fruits and vegetables.

How can you help support and grow the CHFM?
The CHFM has provided economic, social and environmental benefits. But we need your help. The City Heights Farmers Market wouldn’t have happened without the support of its funders, including Price Charities, Wholesome Wave, San Diego County Superintendant Ron Roberts, and Roots of Change. We’ve received grants through the highly competitive USDA Farmers’ Market Promotion Program and ???? Without gifts and donations, the CHFM will not continue.
Come visit us on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.
Check Based on the evaluation by the International Rescue Committee and UC San Diego’s Division of Center for Community Health (funding provided by the Kaiser Foundation), the City Heights community has embraced this first EBT-accessible farmers’ market located in the heart of the neighborhood.
